FOUR mayors have joined forces to launch a new initiative which will see them working more closely together.

The town mayors of Uttoxeter, Ashbourne, Cheadle and Leek launched The Four Market Towns Initiative with a joint Civic Ball at the stateroom at Alton Towers for all four towns and to raise money for the respective mayors’ charities.

The concept is to bring ideas from each town about common issues relating to their respective centres, concerns regarding the commercial wellbeing of the town centres and markets and consider ways to raise visitor numbers not only to the towns but the area of Moorlands they surround.

The concept is also to promote events and share ideas within partnership working. Tourism is a key issue and together it is felt a greater impact can be made at a wider local level and beyond.

Each town has similar concerns and have come together to find solutions to these common issues and to assist each other where possible.

The initiative will see the towns promote themselves from simple matters such as avoiding clashes of function dates and sharing information on websites to more adventurous tasks in terms of promoting the area to a wider local community and nationally. While some of that work has started, this event is a public acknowledgement of the direction the councils’ wish to proceed.

Uttoxeter mayor Martin Blencowe said: “The ball turned out to be a landmark event. In superb surroundings at Alton Towers in their Stateroom, we must thank them for their support you could not fault it.

“I would like to thank the hard work put in by the mayors and their councils’ from Ashbourne, Cheadle and Leek.

“Together we all contributed to its success, not only did it bring the towns together in a very real way but it raised over £1,000 for the various mayors charities.

“The attendance of some 200 clearly showed support for the stated aims of the initiative it launched; to work together in promoting ourselves and the area we surround to the wider local and national community to the benefit of our towns people and our local businesses.

“All residents of market towns, it was clear we all shared common interests and I believe everyone had an enjoyable evening. We had set out to keep the cost as low as possible for such an event to encourage as many as possible to partake, it seemed to work well so here is to next year and I look forward to building on the current achievements.”
