A UTTOXETER man was ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation to his former partner after cutting her hair during an argument.

Michael West, 34, of Chaffinch Drive, pleaded guilty at Burton Magistrates' Court to assaulting Emma Holdham.

The court was told that West thought that Ms Holdham had been cheating on him after seeing some of her messages on Facebook.

During the argument, West picked up a set of electric clippers which he had been using earlier that day and cut off a large section of Ms Holdham's hair at the front of her head.

Sarah Smith, prosecuting, told magistrates that he immediately felt remorseful.

He called the police, who came to the house.

In conversation with an officer wearing a body camera, West admitted that he had assaulted Ms Holdham.

However, he gave no comment in interview.

John Kidney, defending, said: "He made full and frank admissions to the police after phoning them himself.

"The complainant did not want to take matters to court.

"He was also concerned for the wellbeing of the complainant as he thought the men she had been talking to were involved with drugs.

"He saw a list of names on Facebook and recognised them as people who had been mixing in the drug scene.

"He went around speaking to the men he thought were drug dealers telling them not to sell anything to her."

Magistrates punished West by handing him an 18-month community order with supervision conditions.

The defendant was also ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work.

This had been reduced from 150 hours after West was given credit for making an early guilty plea.

He was also issued with a restraining order preventing him from having any contact with Emma Holdham.

That condition will remain in place indefinitely unless either party submits an application to have it removed.

In addition to the £1,000 compensation owed to Ms Holdham, West was told he must pay costs of £105 and a victim surcharge of £80.
