SCHOOL pupils enjoyed an educational visit from a travelling theatre company specialising in maths.
Year 5 and Year 6 Windsor Park Middle School pupils were shown the Quantum Musical Theatre’s production of On The Trail of the Countback Kid.
The show is designed to help the children learn about place value, number operations, the four functions, a variety of mental methods including approximation, partitioning and number bonds, times tables and written methods of addition and subtraction.
The production has been developed to support the maths curriculum and the teaching of numeracy in schools at key stage two and to strengthen much of the number work taught in class.
Peter Halfpenny, head of mathematics, said: “The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the show and there will be follow up work in class to reinforce the strategies encountered during the play.”
On the Trail of the Countback Kid is a western-style musical on numeracy with audience participation and ‘number-line dancing’.
It works well as an introduction to or a reinforcement of Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2 work on problem solving.
It’s touring schools in the south, the Midlands and the north this spring and summer terms.
