ONE of the area’s leading musical theatre companies will be bringing the streets of East End London to the Burton stage later this month.
Burton Operatic Society’s October spectacular will be the much-loved Oliver!, Lionel Bart’s musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic tale.
The story follows Oliver Twist, an orphan who runs away from the workhouse, and is taken in by a criminal called Fagin and joins his gang of child pickpockets.
During the course of the tale the audience is introduced to some of the biggest characters in musical theatre, including one of Fagin’s old pupils, the violent Bill Sykes, Sykes’ girlfriend Nancy, whom Oliver has come to trust, and the best pickpocket of them all, the Artful Dodger.
“It is 13 years since the society has performed this popular musical and the cast is really looking forward to show week,” said a spokesman for Burton Operatic Society.
“The boys’ auditions were held in March and produced 15 very talented local boys who are now well and truly part of Fagin’s gang. From these auditions the parts of the Artful Dodger (Joel Foster) and Oliver (Ben Martin) were cast, and both of these talented boys have worked exceptionally hard to produce the performances the audience will have the chance to see.”
Principal parts will be played by Steven Foster (Fagin), Karen Hambleton (Nancy), Bill Sykes (Andrew Hambleton), Andy Last (Mr Bumble), Angela Wynne (Widow Corney), Iain Wishlade (Mr Sowerbry) and Rachel Cooke (Mrs Sowerbry).
The show runs from Tuesday, October 29 until Saturday, November 2, with performances at 7.30pm and a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm at de Ferrers Academy, in Harehedge Lane, Burton. Tickets are available by calling 01283 541552.
