Written byROB SMYTH

AN East Staffordshire school is set to play host to a popular folk and world music act this evening.

The Hut People are set to take to the stage at Needwood Primary School, in Yoxall Road, Newborough, from 7.30pm as part of a live music tour.

The show will last for two hours and tickets cost £8.

A spokesman for the school said: “The Hut People are one of the hottest and most entertaining folk/world music acts touring today, with appearances at numerous festivals.

“They promise to take you on a musical voyage of the globe with hugely entertaining and unique blend of home-grown tunes, mixed with British, Nordic and European folk music.

“Accordionist Sam Pirt and percussionist Gary Hammond both have extensive backgrounds in music - having been part of and performed alongside legendary acts such as The Beautiful South, Nina Simone, The Dubliners and Sharon Shannon.

“To witness Gary’s eye popping selection of weird and wonderful percussion instruments is worth the ticket price alone.

“Great music and virtuosity aside, a show from The Hut People is bursting with humour, great banter and an abiding sense of fun.

“Taking the audience on a voyage across the globe with their varied material, they perform a hugely engaging, entertaining and truly unique blend of home-grown tunes mixed with British, Nordic and European folk music, perfectly formed & embellished with the driving accordion and a dazzling array of exotic percussion.”

The event will feature a licensed bar from 7pm and all proceeds will go to Newborough School and Church.

The band are playing in the area as part of Live & Local.

This is a not-for-profit arts organisation working with a network of voluntary groups across Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire.

They provide a range of support for arts activities that keep people in touch with their communities and enhance their quality of life.

A spokesman for the organisation said: “The Live & Local community performance scheme helps voluntary groups i to choose and promote high quality professional performances for their local community venue.

“At the heart of the scheme is the opportunity to bring people together to enjoy high quality, affordable, memorable and uplifting live entertainment.”
