I WHOOP with joy whenever Who Do You Think You Are? kicks off a new series on BBC1 and this time it’s a double whammy with series nine now available on DVD.
The complete series of 10 hour-long episodes follows celebrities as they trace their family histories.
It doesn’t matter whether you like, dislike, or are indifferent to those who are prying into their roots, some of the stories, in fact many of the stories, are positively spellbinding.
Take Alex Kingston who positively lights up over stories of a widow with an unexpected and profitable line of business; the trials and tribulations of Gregg Wallace’s ancestors who struggled with love and tragic loss, and Celia Imrie who found that an ancestor on her mother’s side was William, Lord Russell, a Whig parliamentarian who was executed for treason after being found guilty of conspiring against King Charles II of England. Absolutely fascinating.
The series also includes Samantha Womack, Sir Patrick Stewart, Annie Lennox, Hugh Dennis, William Roache, John Barnes and John Bishop.
You’ll be hard stretched to find another documentary which has stood the test of time without altering its format. Each episode is fresh, fun with more twists and turns than an Agatha Christie novel.
It’s also the last series to be narrated by Mark Strong - now there’s a good reason to get the tissues out.
Who Do You Think You are is available, RRP £24.99, from Acorn Media prior to the release date of Monday, August 5.
