HE is more used to asking questions in the House of Commons, but Uttoxeter’s MP has now uttered the most important four-word statement he may ever make – ‘will you marry me?’.
Andrew Griffiths struggled to contain his delight after he revealed how he got down on one knee and popped the question to his girlfriend Kate Kniveton.
The pair first met in 2006 when Mr Griffiths was named as Uttoxeter’s parliamentary candidate for the Tories in the run-up to the 2010 election.
The pair, both 42, hit it off straight away and after courting for a number of years, the town’s beer-loving MP ‘shocked’ his belle by pulling a sparkler out of his pocket and asking her to be Mrs Griffiths.
He said: “I was very traditional and got down on one knee. Even I have to admit that it was quite romantic.
“I think Kate was very shocked and delighted at the same time – she said ‘yes’ straight away and I even managed to get the size of the ring exactly right.
“We celebrated the only way that you should toast a special occasion, with a nice pint of beer.
“We met when I was first selected as a candidate in the town and during the election campaign got to know each other and then this turned into a relationship and years down the line here we are – engaged.
“I think Kate was very surprised at the fact that I turned out to be an old romantic at heart.
“As soon as the dust settles, we will turn our focus on planning the wedding – we both can’t wait.”
Miss Kniveton, whose parents live in Anslow, revealed how the night unfolded when her other half popped the question.
She said: “We were having a quiet night in and then all of a sudden he got down on one knee and asked the question.
“I was over the moon and said ‘yes’ straight away.
“I am a Burton girl and have been all my life and when Andrew proposed it was one of the happiest days of my life so far.”
