VILLAGERS have unveiled a brand new war memorial to mark the centenary of the First World War.

The new Alton war memorial was unveiled on Sunday.

The parish council launched the plan after it emerged the memorial near St Peter's Church did not document the names of all the fallen.

And the updated memorial, featuring all the new names of those who died fighting for their country, has been erected next to the old stone.

The Earl of Shrewsbury turned out to cut the ribbon and officially open the new memorial.

After the ceremony, attendees went to the village hall for a display about the First World War and the Alton soldiers who fought in the trenches.

The parish council has followed in the footsteps of villagers in Stramshall, who recently produced a book documenting the stories of soldiers from the village who died during the First World War.

They sent a copy of the book to the Queen and received a response from her office thanking them for sending it and stating that Her Majesty enjoyed her read.
