AN historic Uttoxeter museum is calling on the townsfolk to show their support and volunteer their time to help make it a success.

Redfern’s Cottage: Museum of Uttoxeter Life is asking residents to spare a little of their time following its recent success in getting cash from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Project manager Laura Wigg-Bailey told the Post and Times that staff at the landmark Carter Street building had been working hard to ensure that the Uttoxeter residents are fully behind the project by holding consultations with schools, town centre businesses, mental health charities and other groups such as the U3A, the Town Team, their own members, volunteers and local historians.

She said: “We’ve chosen a range of methods of consulting with these people, such as focus groups, online surveys and face to face interviewing but we do need a bit of help with this.”

The team is looking for young volunteers who might be interested in learning about how to conduct market research to gain a better understanding of who is using the services or products and who is not, why they are not and what might encourage them to do so in the future.

Mrs Wigg-Bailey added the skills learned at the museum could help young people gain employment when they finish their education.

She said: “Market research is a vital skill for all business people from Tesco right down to market traders and museums, libraries and art galleries are no different.

“In some ways it’s even more important for these organisations to know what’s stopping people from coming through the doors as they are about sharing what they are set up to protect with as many people as possible.

“We’re looking for young people aged between 17 and 23 years old, with a confident demeanour and the hunger to get ahead of the rest by gaining valuable skills.

“In a world where more and more young people are struggling to get jobs after school and university this is an opportunity for them to expand their CVs in a really important area of business and help their local museum to succeed in the next phase of their project to bid for £500k from the Heritage Lottery Fund.”

Anyone interested in volunteering at the museum is asked to e-mail the team at uttoxeter.redfernscottage@live.co.uk or phone them on 01889 567176.
