VISITORS to a stately home near Uttoxeter are looking up as staff celebrate the ‘outstanding’ ceilings.
Sudbury Hall said May was ‘Ceiling Month’, and the conservation team at the property will be trying to draw visitors’ attention to focus on the plasterwork and murals on the ceilings.
Visitors to the tourist attraction can recline on giant bean bags to gaze at the Long Gallery ceiling, while mirrors on the floor in the saloon provide an ‘upside-down’ view of Laguerre’s mural.
Assistant house steward Emma Lipscombe said: “We wanted to take some time to try some new ideas to give visitors the best possible view of Sudbury, even if this does include lying on the floor.”
New ‘Ceiling Focus’ information sheets have been written for rooms with significant ceilings and a brand new children’s trail provides interest and activity for all ages.
The team is also encouraging younger visitors to be inspired by the ceilings with craft activities during half-term, from May 27 to 30, between noon and 4pm.
