A HAPPY couple had more than one reason to celebrate as they reached their diamond anniversary milestone.
Graham and Margaret Needham celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 12, the same day as the first birthday of their great-grandson Logan, and just a week after Mr Needham had received the all-clear for bowel cancer.
The couple, who met at work, and have two daughers, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild, are to celebrate the big day with a family party next weekend.
Margaret Needham said: “I met him at the age of 15 when we were working together at a brake lining firm called Ferodo’s and he was 17.
“He proposed to me when I was 19 and he was 21 and we were married at St George’s Church in New Mills.”
Mr Needham said: “It was love at first sight for me. Margaret had wonderful auburn hair and she is such a chatterbox which I loved.
“I was born in Buxton and Margaret was born in New Mills. I was in the police force and we moved around with my job a lot. I was then seconded to the Home Office as deputy director at the National Crime Prevention Centre. When I retired from that I worked as security advisor for North Staffordshire Hospitals.
“It was a wonderful career and I enjoyed every minute.”
Mrs Needham said: “In those days, when the husband was in the police force, so was the wife so we moved around a lot.
“We’ve loved travelling the world together, a personal highlight for me was Kenya where we went on safari which was amazing.
“We’ve been all over the world and had some brilliant experiences.
“Our first daughter came along when I was 24 and we had our second two years later.
“My great-grandchild turned one on our anniversary and he is the light of my life.”
Mr Needham said: “We’ve had our ups and downs just like any couple but the secret to a long and happy marriage is the fact we are best of friends as well as man and wife.
“We are old romantics at heart and we went for a romantic dinner together to celebrate on the day.
“Then we’ll be having our family party at my daughter’s next week.”
Mrs Needham said: “I received a pair of golden hoop earrings with diamonds in them as a gift. I was also completely surprised and thrilled to receive a letter from the Queen.”
Mr Needham said: “We both enjoy gardening and spending time with our wonderful family. We've lived here in Uttoxeter for 38 years now.”
