A UTTOXETER shopping centre dubbed ‘an eyesore’ by townsfolk is to undergo a full refurbishment, it has been confirmed.
During the next six months the Maltings shopping centre is to see improvements and the new plans are set to be unveiled in a few weeks’ time.
At a recent Uttoxeter town council meeting, newly appointed deputy mayor Andrew Riley said: “The Maltings will undergo a full refurbishment in the next six months
“There are also strong talks on the JCB legacy development so when those two projects are complete, we can expect a huge lift for the town centre.”
Malcolm Barrett, director of MJ Barrett Group which owns the Maltings, confirmed the refurbishment was to take place.
He said: “We are currently going through the plans and will be able to go public with them over the next two to three weeks.”
Town traders and parish councillors have welcomed the news of the improvements.
David Hunter, owner of Indulgence Coffee Lounge, said: “We welcome an update to the Maltings that makes it a more inviting retail experience for shoppers.
“We look forward to the opportunity it will provide to new and existing town traders.
“Our business has already seen the impact of the new Asda development in town and we’ve been busier than usual.
“We can only attribute that extra buzz to the new Asda opening, we’ve seen new faces as well as regulars, the town centre is busier and this improvement can only be increased by the Maltings being revamped and encouraging more footfall.”
Councillor Martin Blencowe, representative for Uttoxeter for the Four Towns Initiative tourism group said: “I am very pleased to hear that there is to be a refurbishment of the Maltings.
“It completes the redevelopment of the town centre, from the Asda car park through to the shopping centre, and will hopefully encourage people to use the high street more in between.
“It will bring more people into town and the need to increase footfall is something that the Four Towns Initiative are very aware of.”
