A UTTOXETER firefighter is preparing to pull on his running shoes once again after just completing his first marathon.

Simon Poole, who is based at Uttoxeter Community Fire Station, completed the London Marathon at the weekend in four hours 22 minutes and nine seconds – and now he has got a taste for it.

After smashing his fund-raising target to raise £2,190 for the burns unit at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, he is now once again training hard for the Chester Marathon on Sunday, October 5.

This time he will be raising funds for The Fire Fighters Charity and has set himself the target of raising £150.

Mr Poole said: “The London Marathon was really good. I think around the 18 mile point I started to feel it in my legs but other than that it was fantastic.

“It was a once in a lifetime experience and I would definitely do it again.

“I would like to thank everyone who has sponsored me and say a special thanks to David Glennan from Tyrrells Crisps Uttoxeter and also Dan Garnett JCB in Rocester.”

He was inspired to raise money for the burns unit because of his job dealing with fires as patients he has attended to during blazes have ended up needing treatment at a hospital.

Although it was the first time the firefighter has run in a marathon, it is not the first time he has found himself doing something to raise money for a good cause.

Mr Poole was part of the team which took part in a ladder climb for the Three Peaks for Lisa challenge, in memory of Lisa Oldham who died following a tragic house fire at her home in Wood Lane, Uttoxeter.

However, he said that despite just finishing the London Marathon he will not be giving himself much of a break.

In preparation for his next marathon, he will take part in the Uttoxeter Half Marathon and the Potters ‘Arf Marathon to get himself in top physical condition for the big day.

Mr Poole told the Post and Times: “If anybody was unable to donate to me taking part in the London Marathon, if they still would like to sponsor me for the Fire Fighters Charity they will be able to donate for me taking part in the Chester Marathon.”

Anyone who would like to sponsor Mr Poole for the Chester Marathon can do so by visiting the Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/FFCharitySimonPoole
