A WELL-KNOWN Uttoxeter man is to take on an epic bike ride to raise money for injured jockeys.

Clerk of Uttoxeter Racecourse Charlie Moore has set himself the challenge of a sponsored cycle ride from Newcastle to Uttoxeter to complete in the space of just 12 days.

He will be stopping off at nine racecourses along the way, in a bid to raise awareness of the Injured Jockeys Fund and to raise as much money as he can to help support the valuable work of the charity.

He told the Advertiser: "As it's the 50th anniversary of the charity and the 25th anniversary of me starting at the racecourse, it's a special year so I wanted to give something back to people who are so dedicated to racing.

"The fund is for both individuals and families – jockeys or their families who are in need of support.

"Some jockeys suffer horrific injuries as a result of racing and this is about giving something back.

"Recently the charity has opened a rehabilitation centre for the jockeys, Oaksey House."

And Charlie hasn't been deterred by the fact he is not a regular cyclist.

He said: "I've been cycling in France on holiday – but I'm not a regular cyclist by any means.

"It will be a challenge.

"I want to visit all the racecourses in our group, so this year I will be doing nine of them, and then next year I will do another ride incorporating the other five which will be for Racing Welfare charity."

He added: "This cycle challenge is going to be mainly unsupported so I hope that despite my age, larger than ideal frame – me not the bike – and moderate fitness, I can manage the 1,200 kilometres in 12 days.

"It would be great to do it in 10 days, and that will be my target, but with 12 days in place for planning.

"That said, I would be delighted to have company – no Bradley Wiggins types though – for any part of the ride, especially if through additional involvement we can raise more money for the Injured Jockeys Fund.

"There are a couple of long hauls – Southwell to Great Yarmouth and then Great Yarmouth to Lingfield – which might appeal to some.

"The aim is to become fitter, healthier and slimmer but, most importantly, to raise lots of money for a fantastic charity which is so vital to racing and to the jockeys.

"All support in various ways will be much appreciated.

"My target is to complete it in between two race days, so I have 12 days only, there's no other alternative.

"I have to be back for the October race day.

"If I can do it in less than 12 days I will."
