TWENTY-FOUR apartments for the elderly are set to be built in the centre of Uttoxeter, as well as a separate development of social rented housing if planning consent is given.

The sheltered accommodation flats would be situated in Church Street, adjacent to listed building Eastfield.

The development would comprise three storeys in one part and four storeys in the second part, to form 24 sheltered apartments designed specifically for older people.

In addition to the 24 flats, there would be one apartment for warden accommodation to provide round-the-clock support for tenants.

The design includes access for vehicles with five parking spaces and two disabled parking spaces.

The site is a former builders yard which is currently vacant.

Lime Architecture Limited are the agent acting on behalf of applicants Angus Mackinnon for the new development.

A second application has gone in to demolish an existing nursing home on Balance Street and to replace the site with one block of 33 apartments and one block of five terraced dwellings.

If the application should be successful, Balance House Nursing Home would be demolished to make way for the new social rented housing.

The apartments would be one-bedroomed and the five terraced homes will be two-bedroomed.

The reason given for demolishing the former nursing home, is that 'it is in a poor state of repair and its demolition has been accepted in principle in previous grants of Conservation Area Consents'.

Thirty-eight car parking spaces and two disabled spaces are to be part of the new development.

Anyone wishing to comment on either application can do so by going to www.eaststaffsbc.gov.uk and heading to the planning section of the website to search for P/2014/00979 to comment on the apartments for the elderly and P/2014/01011 to comment on the new apartment block and terraced homes.

The planning officer for both applications is Jonathan Imber who can be contacted by phoning 01283 508695.
