‘THE future is bright for Uttoxeter’ the director of the town’s racecourse has said as ticket sales for its first major gig starring a globally recognised band look set to sell-out.
David MacDonald, executive director of Uttoxeter Racecourse, said preparations were well and truly under way with only six weeks left until they welcome reggae band UB40 to the town.
The Red Red Wine hitmakers will perform at the Wood Lane venue after the racing on Saturday, May 17 and organisers have already seen an ‘massive’ increase in the ticket sales.
Mr MacDonald told the Advertiser that this is something the racecourse hopes to repeat each year with different big named bands.
He said: “Tickets sales have been fantastic and the UB40 gigs have sold out throughout the country.
“Ticket sales have gone up massively and we are expecting a sell-out crowd.
“All of the UB40 dates have sold out at every venue they have performed at and the feedback has been tremendous.
“Ticket sales are up every day and we are selling between 300 and 400 a week regularly for the last few months and our hospitality options is almost sold out which is magnificent.”
UB40 is one of the world’s best-selling acts with more than 70 million record sales to their name, and hits such as One in Ten, Kingston Town and Can’t Help Falling in Love among some of the 20th century’s best-known hit singles.
The latter was a number one single in both the UK and America and the theme tune of the Hollywood blockbuster Sliver.
Throughout their career spanning 30 years they have been twice nominated for the Best Reggae Album at the Grammy Awards.
The bandmates continue to tour to sell-out arenas and festivals globally.
Anyone thinking of getting tickets for the show are being urged to get a feel for the band online and read feedback from previous gigs to help make their decision.
Mr MacDonald added: “I would say to anyone considering coming to check out the tour on You Tube to get a feel for the gig and the atmosphere.
“There has also been a lot of positive feedback on the UB40 fans forum.”
The racecourse is going all out for the big night and said fans will not be disappointed as the stage area itself will take four days before the show to build ready for the band.
“This is going to be an enormous production and the biggest we have had with lighting, sound and staging,” said Mr MacDonald.
“We have people coming four days before to prepare for it.
“With six weeks to go it has already paid for itself and I personally am really excited for the first one of these sets.
“We are looking ahead to the future and hope to put on one of these shows a year.
“The future is bright for Uttoxeter as we could be bringing in more major bands.”
The gates will open at 8.30pm with the first race leaving the starting post at 5.35pm and the last race at 8.50pm.
