TRADE minister Lord Livingston visited JCB in Rocester to impart his knowledge of a unique German model for exporting.
The Government trade expert came to the digger giant to promote the Mittelstand approach which he said is the root of Germany’s export success.
Lord Livingston said: “German companies have been using this model for a long time and I think it’s really important that we take their example in order to build a sustainable business environment where people feel confident to invest in the long term.
“JCB have kindly been our host for today and though the Mittelstand model does not apply to them, I think smaller firms should take JCB as an example of what they can become.
“Mid-sized businesses have the potential to be economic powerhouses for the UK economy, creating jobs and growth for all regions of the UK.
“Their success is dependent on expanding beyond domestic markets so we will be making personal contact with all mid-sized businesses to find out what we can do to help them go up a gear and compete with the best the rest of the world has to offer.
“Businesses excel with the support of UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) and we want to make sure that they are not just trading abroad, but thriving there.”
Paul Noon, the UKTI’s Regional Director for the West Midlands also attended the event.
He said: “The visit gave Lord Livingston the chance to meet mid-sized companies face-to-face.
“He heard about the huge successes that individual companies are having and some of the challenges faced by others.
“The Mittelstand event will show West Midlands mid-sized firms that they don’t need to copy Germany, but we can certainly learn from them, understand their model for training, product development and finance, and cherry pick the elements that are most suitable to our businesses.”
Lord Livingston was previously the CEO for the BT Group, and was appointed as the Minister of Trade and Investment in December of last year.
He is a Conservative member of the House of Lords.
