HUGE crowds turned out to enjoy the John Smith Summer Cup at the town racecourse, despite the weather for the day being typical of a ‘British summer’.
Despite the early morning drizzle, 9,163 people turned out for the third running of The John Smith’s Summer Cup at Uttoxeter Racecourse, in Wood Lane.
The racecourse had increased prize money for the day to £110,000 which attracted some excellent fields and made for a very competitive Summer Cup.
Executive director of Uttoxeter Racecourse, David MacDonald, was delighted with the turn out.
He said: “The increased prize money meant we were running the most valuable Sunday jumps racecard in the UK this Summer which once again put Uttoxeter on the map and how apt that in a World Cup year the winner of the big race was called The Romford Pele.
“This is the fifth race meeting so far this year that has attracted a crowd of over 9,000 which shows our mission to make the big days bigger is working.”
Charlie Moore, clerk to the course, said: “This was only the third year we have held the Summer Cup.
“It really was a cracking race, attracting quality horses and a lot of interest.
“Taking place at the end of June, beginning of July, we know it can only go from strength to strength.”
