SEATING areas, shrub tubs and a promotional campaign for the town’s farmers’ market were among the suggestions put to the town team on how £10,000 should be spent to invigorate the town centre.

Uttoxeter residents took to social media to make their suggestions on how the town team £10,000 funding pot should be invested in the town centre to promote tourism.

Graeme Jones, leader of the town team is appealing for as many people as possible to make their voice heard.

Pete Smith said via Facebook: “Make the Maltings undercover and give it a good revamp. It’s still stuck in the 1960s and needs to look new and attractive to shoppers. “No wonder theres more than 10 shops empty.”

Diana Carolyn Somerton said via Facebook: “Provide seating and shrub tubs and make it nice to sit outside and socialise.”

Ali Archer said: “Bring real shops back into town and a market like in the old days. Make a reason for shoppers to come in and stop letting the free parking providers like the Tescos of the world make all the money.”

Sam Adams said: “Modernisation is needed through promotion and support.”

Alex Fernihough said: “It’s going to need more than £10,000 to sort the town centre out, it’s been in decline ever since the cattle market and JCB left.

“Use the money to implement a system to allow three hours free parking and advertise about it.

“The town needs more footfall not artwork in empty shops.”

James Brighouse said: “Unfortunately £10,000 is not enough to even begin developing the Maltings.

“A possible use for the money would be developing the town’s farmer’s market. Well structured promotion or PR campaigns could draw traders and shoppers alike.

“The knock on effect for the town could be huge.

“With most of today’s communication taking place here, online, I’d suggest branding and promoting the markets as Facebook events.”

Graeme Jones said: “Getting feedback from people who live in and use the town is very useful.

“What we can do with this money is to undertake ‘proof of concept’ events.

“If we can show that we can make events in Uttoxeter work better then I think we stand a good chance of getting some more funding.”

People can make their suggestions for the funding via email at townteam@uttoxeterlions.co.uk
