A NEW group supporting people with heart issues has held a successful first meeting.

The group was formed to support people who have gone under the knife for heart surgery, about to have the operation or have any other problems relating to their heart.

Hermione Montgomery, whose husband and former mayor Hugh Montgomery had a triple heart bypass, started the group after seeing a real need for a support network for people who find themselves in this position.

The first meeting saw seven people attend, the youngest being just one and the oldest almost 80, but more people have expressed a desire to attend future meetings.

The next meeting will now be held on Monday, August 4 at 3pm at the conference room at Balance Street Surgery. Thereafter it will be on August 18 and September 1.

The group is now also affiliated to the British Heart Foundation and will be discussing topics including diets, suitable exercise, support available and recovery with the hope of getting guest speakers to attend.

The Burton Rehabilitation Team has also given its support to the group.

Councillor Montgomery, who sits of Uttoxeter Town Council, said: "It is nice to see people interested and certainly from the first meeting we have found that it is something that is required.

"We will now devise a programme around what people want from the meetings. We can start talking to the right people and give appropriate discussions.

"I would like to thank everyone for their support and I hope to get more people along to the next one. We don't expect people to come to every session and it is not just for people in Uttoxeter.

"Hugh will be doing this with me and he will be a great person to talk to as he has been through it."

The group has already been nominated for the Lloyd's Community Award and is one out of four across the West Midlands before it held its first meeting.

Voting will start in September and can be done online or through texting.
