A LEADING lifesaving charity is urging schools in Uttoxeter to take part in an online first aid course that will help youngsters learn vital skills.

St John Ambulance issued the plea to teachers in a bid to get them to take part in the Big First Aid Lesson on Friday, June 25.

The day will see a special online first aid lessons streamed to schools to allow pupils to watch and pick up skills after it was revealed that teachers would like to equip their students with first aid skills, but cited a lack of time, staff training and cost as barriers to introducing lessons into the classroom.

Nick Pitt, West Midlands regional schools training officer for St John Ambulance, said: “At St John Ambulance, we believe that first aid should be as much a part of growing up as learning to cross the road.

“It’s so easy to learn, and can have such an incredible impact on people’s lives, but because it’s not compulsory on the national curriculum, only a minority of schoolchildren would know what to do if one of their classmates, or a member of their family became ill or injured.

“It only takes an hour to learn how to save a life, but it could be the most important lesson your students ever learn.

"We hope teachers take this opportunity and sign up for the Big First Aid lesson.”

It was also revealed that 57 per cent of teachers believe it would take first aid training to be a national curriculum requirement in order for more schools to take it seriously.

This online programme has been designed for students aged between seven and 16 years old and the only equipment schools will need is an internet connection and a screen for their pupils to watch in the classroom or during assembly.

St John Ambulance also offers a student first aid scheme.

The programme offers school staff the flexibility to choose the training option that’s right for their students, and fit it around the demands of a busy school day.
