UTTOXETER director of rugby Donald Hayes is looking for a repeat of the Newcastle performance tomorrow – minus the errors.

The Oldfields outfit travel to second-placed Handsworth as they resume their Midlands Three West (North) campaign.

The league game comes seven days after Uttoxeter were dumped out of the Staffordshire Intermediate Cup by Newcastle, but Hayes took several positives from the performance.

He said: “We were all left a bit shell-shocked and disappointed, we chucked away a special victory away from home at Newcastle.

“We played all the rugby and put together some really good phases of play and we got in the right areas.”

Uttoxeter had opened up an 8-0 lead following a Lewis Bain try and Paul Milward penalty.

Newcastle responded before the interval, but the visitors forged ahead once again at the star of the second period.

However, the hosts struck the decisive blows with break-away tries,

“Fair play to Newcastle – they weathered the storm and waited for our errors,” said the director of rugby.

“When they (the errors) came Newcastle were able to capitalise and put away the chances with lethal precision.

“We’ve got lots of positives to take from this game.

“The pack was outstanding – led by Pete Allen.

“On Saturday we travel to Handsworth in the league and all we need to do is produce the same kind of a performance – minus the passing errors.”
