Uttoxeter ready for Cannock in promotion battle

UTTOXETER winger James Gill says the Town are ready for a physical battle with Cannock in their promotion face-off at the weekend.

The 26-year-old back says it is vital for Uttoxeter to stick to their game and move the ball quickly around the field in the Midlands Four West (North) clash at Cannock on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.

“We’re expecting a physical clash as they will be quite a powerful side,” said the experienced winger. “It’ll be vital we stick to our patterns of play and play a quick game and move the ball around the field.

“I think our fitness and agility will be the biggest asset that we can call upon.

“We’ll want to keep Cannock running round the park and wear them out.”

Uttoxeter, looking for promotion after the injustice of their relegation last season following a points deduction, squeezed Cannock out 22-21 in a thriller at Oldfields in December.

“We won by just one point despite scoring four tries to Cannock’s two,” said Gill. “We conceded a lot of penalties and allowed their accurate place kicker to kick them back into the game.

“We must take our chances and give nothing away. It’s getting to the stage of the season where every point counts and mistakes can prove costly.

“We’ve built up good momentum, but Cannock have to play Market Drayton and Tenbury yet so know that we are a must-win game.”

Uttoxeter lead Cannock by a single point in the table but will enter the fixture well-rested after being out of action last weekend.
