UTTOXETER Town are “in the mix” to win Staffordshire Senior League’s Premier Division this season according to captain Martin Gadsby.
Last season’s Division One champions opened life in the top tier with a draw against Redgate Clayton, and lost to current leaders Ball Haye Green in game three.
But Town are now on an eight-game unbeaten run, and lie just one point behind Green in the Premier Division standings.
Gadsby said: “We’re beginning to find our feet in the league after the first couple of weeks in which we probably didn’t believe in ourselves enough.
“Consistency will win the league this season.
“Ball Haye Green and Wolstanton are probably the two favourites to win it, but I really believe we will be in the mix.
“There are some fantastic young players in the squad – and we have a few older heads now as well which is helping the young lads.”
Gadsby also hailed Town’s dressing room spirit as a key factor.
He said: “It still very early days but I know the desire and quality of the lads in the dressing room will see us have a successful season.”
The Oldfields outfit have enjoyed an impressive start to life in Saturday football, and the club are keen to maintain the momentum.
Gadsby said: “Off the pitch we are trying hard to push the club forward and now is the time to do it – while we are on the up.
“We don’t want to stagnate, we want to keep the support and to be successful.
“It is about giving the Town a football club that young 15 and 16 year olds aspire to play for without having to go 20 miles down the road to Leek or Kidsgrove or Newcastle.
Town squeezed past Keele in the League Cup last time out, and Mark Grimley’s side remain in knock-out action this weekend.
Gadsby said: “We have some tough cup matches coming up, starting with Ashbourne on Saturday (in the Leek Cup, kick-off 2pm) which will be a fierce local derby.
“We’ll have to perform better than last week if we want to get through, but I’m sure there will be a considerable improvement.”
