Simpson's late goal sends Rocester to final

WITH the prospect of a penalty shoot-out looming, Rocester substitute Stuart Simpson grabbed an 85th-minute winner to defeat holders Gresley FC in the first semi-final of the Steve Hackett Memorial Trophy.

The Romans fielded seven players who featured in the Don Hill Memorial Trophy at the Moat Ground the previous Saturday and were the better side against the Moatmen, who sent a reserve side this year.

In a game of few clear-cut openings, Jack Langstons cross set up Romans team-mate Craig Hulme, who was denied by an excellent save from Paul Hollis on the half-hour.

Gresley replied, with Sam Worth shooting just beyond the far post.

Mark Hodson (pictured) wasted the games clearest opening on 59 minutes when he was denied by Hollis with only the keeper to beat.

Hollis replacement, Tom Govan, was just as involved after he came on for the last 15 minutes, blocking two efforts in a matter of seconds.

However, he was left with little chance when Sam Wain crossed for fellow substitute Simpson, who scored with a precise finish.

Rocester will play Newhall United in the final at the Hawfields tonight, kick-off 7pm.
