SLIDESHOW: Cotton collects a brace as table-topping Uttoxeter march on

Written byHOCKEY REPORTER

BECKY Cotton struck a brace as table-topping Uttoxeter maintained their five-point advantage at the top of Feeder West with a 4-0 victory over mid-table Sutton Coldfield.

The game started out fairly even, with the solid Uttoxeter defence of Lisa Lilley, Hazel Townsend, Loz Davenport and Michelle Wildsmith working hard to keep the away side at bay.

Uttoxeter had some good early chances, but could not convert and it looked like it could be one of those days when the home side’s luck was not in.

After a period of pressure from Sutton, Wildsmith took a hit out to Rachel Vernon, who turned and found Davenport in the centre.

Davenport fed the ball through to Caroline Lawson who had made a clever run up the middle of the pitch.

Lawson then released the ball to Jo Rea at the top of the D. Rea found Anna Young who finished a well-worked Uttoxeter move in clinical fashion.

Uttoxeter’s tails were up and they continued to pile on the pressure.

Captain Townsend made a crushing interception on the halfway line and surged towards the D.

A goalmouth scramble followed, and Becky Cotton managed to slot the ball between the keeper’s legs to put Uttoxeter two goals up at the break.

Uttoxeter continued to assert their dominance in the second half.

The passes flowed and the pitch opened up, allowing the Alleyne’s outfit time to work the ball around the opposition.

The third goal was created by some skilful play down the right from Laura Walsh, who passed to Emily Cann before Vernon took possession inside the D.

Vernon won a penalty corner and Rea neatly converted despite the rush defence.

Moments later Young scored her second of the day after some neat build-up play pulled the Sutton defence apart.

The hosts could have finished with a goal flourish.

Numerous chances followed but Uttoxeter were unable to take advantage and further improve their goal difference.

In the final stages home keeper Deb Lindop made some superb saves to keep a clean sheet.

Uttoxeter travel to Telford and Wrekin tomorrow,

Players’ player: Laura Walsh/Jo Rea/Hazel Townsend.
