WINGER James Gill reckons Uttoxeter are in excellent shape to earn promotion at the first time of asking following relegation the previous season.
Despite a "blip" the Oldfields outfit top Midlands Four West (North) by one point albeit having played one game more than promotion rivals Market Drayton and Cannock. Gill said: "I think we've gone from strength to strength and learnt a lot about ourselves and how to control situations. We are more capable of winning the league now - it's application at the right time that will be key.
"We had a bit of a blip midway through the first half of the season and felt out of it a little bit. As it happened teams have since take points off each other so it's back in our own hands now."
Uttoxeter return to action at rock bottom Telford Hornets tomorrow (Saturday, January 5). Hornets have failed to win a league game all season but Gill is not expecting the Telford outfit to simply hand over the points.
He said: "They have had a really poor season. They've really under-performed and I think it's surprised a lot of people. They came down from the division above two season ago and have struggled for points.
Gill points to narrow losses against Five Ways and Cannock, plus the opening day draw at Clee Hill as indicators of Hornets' ability. "We're not expecting a complete pushover," said Gill. "We're not going into the game to big headed. But obviously we'll be looking to take all five points."
