UTTOXETER Juniors – in Division Two of the Burton Junior League’s under-11 set-up – were shocked by Division Four Outwoods Eagles in the McDonald’s Knockout Cup.
Their hopes of a good cup run were ruined when they failed to convert any of their chances in a very evenly contested match.
Both teams started brightly, with the Eagles forcing Juniors keeper Conlon Newton-Taylor into a fantastic double save, firstly pushing the ball out wide and then out for a corner.
From the resulting corner, Juniors broke, winning a free kick deep in the Eagles half. Josh Buckley fired just over the bar.
Juniors’ Robbie Charlesworth then won a corner with a superb run up the wing. Buckley delivered a lovely ball into the box where Chandler Davies’ shot was saved by the keeper. Charlesworth’s follow-up shot was blocked on the line.
Eagles looked really dangerous on the break and took the lead just before half-time, crossing the ball deep in Juniors’ half with the ball going through the legs of a defender, leaving Ben Taberner with an easy tap-in.
Newton-Taylor started another flowing move for Juniors, passing the ball out to Mat Hughes. He found his defensive partner, Owen Emery, who picked out Buckley on the wing.
He dinked a lovely ball over the top of the Eagles defence for Tom Bell to run onto, only for him to be denied by a quick thinking Eagles keeper, who was quick off his line to gather the ball.
Hawley then set up Finley Norton for Juniors, but he had his shot blocked by some solid defending.
Juniors kept pushing forward with some nice play between midfield duo Charlesworth and Davies controlling the game and releasing Hawley on the wing. He delivered the ball to Bell in the box, who chested it down for Hawley to run onto, forcing the keeper into a fine save.
Buckley then set up Juniors’ last chance of the game, but Robert Davenport’s shot from a long throw was blocked.
It was a disappointing game for Juniors, who will now have to concentrate on the league.

Tutbury Tigers U10 0
UTTOXETER Juniors began their defence of the MacDonald’s Knockout Cup with a thumping win over Tutbury Tigers.
Uttoxeter got off to a flying start when the excellent Reuben Kenny scored after being set up by Ethan Newton Taylor and shortly after Kenny made it 2-0 with a volley from a corner.
Just before half-time, defender Ben Meads made the score 3-0 when his shot from distance found the net with the Tutbury keeper’s view obscured.
The second half saw Uttoxeter in total control of the match.
Their goalie, Oliver Lodge, spent most of half playing as a sweeper on the halfway line, such was Uttoxeter’s domination.
Ethan Newton-Taylor hit the post and Kian Hall the bar before Jed Brunt extended Uttoxeter’s lead to 4-0 with a fine individual goal.
New signing Charlie Fenwick capped a classy man-of-the-match performance with two well-taken goals to round off a fine 6-0 win.
