ROCESTER were last night hoping to find out whether their FA Vase tie against Runcorn Town had been switched to Sunday.
Boss Dave Langston is keen to move the fourth round match back a day to pick up fans who would otherwise be watching the likes of Stoke City, Derby County and Burton Albion.
“It would be great for the club to do it,” said the Romans chief. “We’d pick up fans who might not otherwise be able to make it.
“I’d love a crowd of 10,000! “Seriously, it’d be great to get a crowd of 200 or 300 in.
“It’s something really different at the club and people who might go to the pub to watch a match on a Sunday could come down and see us play.
“Stoke and Burton fans, too, would be able to come if it was on the Sunday.” After snow wiped out the first two Saturdays when the match was due to be played, the threat at Hillsfield now is waterlogging.
“There was still a lot of snow on the pitch on Sunday,” said Langston. “The river banks have broken as well as there’s water two feet away from the fence.” A decision from the FA on whether the tie can be played on Sunday was due yesterday.
Meanwhile, Langston is concerned about the lack of preparation for the tie after last night’s Midland Alliance League Cup quarter-final against Loughborough University was postponed.
“We’ve not played since Gornal Athletic (on January 12), while Runcorn played last Wednesday,” said the Romans boss.
“They’ve been getting in some games and training.
“We’ve been getting in as much training as we can on the 3G pitch, but it’s not the same.
“We’ll be really up against it — they’ll be a little bit sharper than us.” The prize for both sides is clear with a home tie against Walsall Wood or Hanworth Villa in the fifth round a week on Saturday. But Rocester and Town will have to cope with a serious backlog of games.
“Runcorn have been moaning,” said Langston. “They’re third in the league, but have still played more games than us.
“We’ll have two, maybe three, games a week. Our success in the FA Vase and our League Cup is killing us.”
