Uttoxeter RFC director of rugby Donald Hayes was disappointed his side’s result against Eccleshall was not more comprehensive after winning their final league match of 2013.
Hayes’ side ground out an 18-13 result that keeps the team sixth in the table.
“Both sides must have been left scratching their heads after the match pondering why they produced such a dour game,” he said.
“The game was there for the taking but neither side really took it by the scruff of the neck.
“Arguably we played the best spell in the match in the opening 20 minutes, but we did not convert this pressure into points and did not go on to dominate the match in the way we should have done.
“We’re delighted to take the victory especially after such a heavy defeat the week before.
“Again, we had a different side out and it’s making continuity hard which may be what’s disrupting us imposing our patterns of play.
“I’m delighted with our league position at the halfway point in the campaign – we’ve got seven victories under our belt already and our previous best for a season at this level is nine all season.”
Uttoxeter have no game this weekend, and end 2013 with a trip to Newcastle in the Staffordshire Cup on December 28.
“We are ready for a rest,” said Hayes.
“Newcastle seem to be under-par and affected by unavailabilities in the same way we are.
“Based on how they played us earlier in the season I would expect them to be much higher up the table.
“Whatever the outcome of this fixture it’s unlikely to be a true representation of either side’s squad.”
