GEORGE Hudson has been nominated for the Staffordshire Football Association Groundsman of the Year 2014 award.

Oldfields is renowned for its immaculate playing surface – despite being used by Uttoxeter Town, Uttoxeter Town A, Uttoxeter Town Youth and junior football.

FA officials inspected the pitch on Wednesday, and Town boss Mark Grimley reckons Hudson deserves recognition for his work as Oldfields groundsman.

“He deserves the credit,” said Grimley. “In my opinion the pitch is second to none at our (Uttoxeter Town) level – and even the level above.

“There’s not many better surfaces, even in August or May, and that’s even with four teams playing on it.

“Teams love coming to Oldfields.

“When we had the Roger Croft memorial match a few years back it rained for a week beforehand.

“People were saying that the game was in doubt.

“On the day the pitch was stunning.

“We had ex-pros saying ‘this is a nice surface, we’ve no excuses on this’ – and that’s seasoned professionals.”

Judges score groundsmen based on their individual contribution and ambition to improve the pitch.

County awards will be presented to those in first, second and third place.

The winner will represent Staffordshire in the national competition.
