A SOCIAL group for the over 65s could be set up in town if enough interest is shown.

Marlene Foulds, resident of Uttoxeter, is asking those who would be interested in joining a social club for those aged 65 to 75 to get in touch to register their interest.

The call comes months after a community action group discussed running a Saturday morning social for older people with mobility issues.

Mrs Foulds said: “I would like to find out if anyone is interested in joining a meeting group for both men and women to get together once a week or less to introduce themselves to each other.

“Different topics would be discussed at each meeting.

“Give it a try, there’s nothing to lose, and it might be something to gain.”

Those wishing to get involved and join the group should contact Mrs Foulds on 07772 641020.

The suggestions for social groups come after the Steeple View Day Centre, which catered for elderly people and adults with disabilities, closed last year.

The facility in George Elliot Close, which costed around £100,000 to run, was transferred back to Trent and Dove Housing Association from Staffordshire County Council, for communal use by the residents of Highwood Court.

The Uttoxeter Community Action Group reported they were ‘extremely disappointed’ by the council’s decision to close the centre and voiced their concerns there was no plan for replacing the services.

A drop in centre was also something brought up in consultations at the Heath Big Local as one of the suggestions for the ways to spend £1 million lottery funding in the Heath.
