A DEPUTY head teacher will be joined by the PTA as he plans to leave their shoes at home and take to the streets of Uttoxeter barefoot in a bid to help improve facilities.

Picknalls First School, in Oldfields Road, was faced with the challenge of thinking up a new way of raising money after a desperate need arose for new carpets and a general revamp of the early years development department.

The PTA and staff got together in a bid to come up with something new to raise funds and with the thought of the comfortable new flooring they could achieve, they came up with an unusual idea.

Four members of the committee and staff decided they would undergo an eight mile sponsored walk this bank holiday Saturday – but without their shoes and socks.

PTA chairman Heather Forrester, treasurer Rachel Fuller, secretary Natalie Russell and deputy head teacher Grahame Cope will be undergoing the challenge together.

The ‘Barefoot Walk of Madness’ will start at Picknalls at 10am, aiming to reach the Robin Hood pub in Bramshall at about 11am, stopping in Stramshall between noon and 12.30pm and ending back at Picknalls at approximately 1.30pm.

Supporters are invited to join the walkers at any of the ‘pit stops’, where they are planning to undergo additional barefoot challenges.

The walk will be combined with an open day at Picknalls nursery, a pre-school facility for three to four-year-olds, which aims to provide a fun-filled learning environment whilst preparing children for entry into school life.

The school will open at 10am to all prospective pre-schoolers and their parents and everyone will be very welcome.

A spokesman for the school said: “All donations for this cause are gratefully received, and will be hugely appreciated by the children of Picknalls First School.”

Ways to donate to the Barefoot Walk of Madness include justgiving.com – Picknalls first school, or text FEET08 followed by the amount of the donations in £ to 70070.

Alternatively well-wishers can send donations directly into the school in a sealed envelope.

More information is available on the project is now available online at www.picknalls.staffs.sch.uk/
