A UTTOXETER mental health charity could be the latest town group forced to close its doors due to a lack of funding, it has been revealed.

Only weeks after it was announced funding will be cut from Rethink, which runs Bradley Court, the Art and Soul Friendship Group now could also be forced to close after bosses could not secure sufficient cash.

Since first starting up, the charity has been relying on a variety of smaller grants which have been 'gratefully received' but no long-term funding has been achieved.

Vikki Baker, senior project worker, said: "There is work going on behind the scenes regarding funding by people and organisations that believe in and value the charity and what it stands for, but without bigger grants being issued the charity cannot continue running on a shoestring.

"We have low overheads because we use the skills and knowledge that our members have to run workshops and heavily rely on volunteers to provide services such as Shiatsu, silk painting and garden project to name a few.

"We have had a number of students gain experience from our project, from sixth form, Prince's Trust, college and university placements.

"We have a lot of support in the community and are very grateful to all those who have been kind and caring enough to make donations of any kind in the past.

"We are in desperate need of long term core funding, which is so hard to achieve."

This is not the first time Art and Soul has found itself in trouble but last time they were saved by a £7,500 donation from the Talbot Charity Bike Ride. This kept the charity a float till more funds were secured.

Ms Baker added the charity is filling an ever-growing gap which has been left from cuts to other services with more than 400 members visiting the project each month.
