AN EMPHATIC victory over Lichfield on Saturday has secured second spot in Division Two of the Staffordshire Women’s Hockey League (SWHL) – and a probable promotion – for Uttoxeter seconds.
The 2XI side, who have now completed their campaign, are just awaiting confirmation from the SWHL that they will be now playing Division One hockey next season.
Uttoxeter raced into the lead following some nice work down the left by Emma Nance, who fed Amanda Edwards.
She knocked the ball into the middle, finding Bev Degg, who placed the ball between the post and the keeper.
With momentum in their favour, Amy Cooper found Nic Nullis whose shot was saved by the Lichfield keeper,
Degg was first to react to the rebound and slotted home Uttoxeter’s second.
Lichfield tried their best to get back into the game and enjoyed a purple patch. The Uttoxeter defence of Kathy Mackey, Lou Bassett and Laura Ellerton, were under the cosh – but the visitors failed to trouble keeper Jackie Land.
Uttoxeter regained the initiative and grabbed a third goal before the break.
Lisa Paling skipped past several challenges and picked out Nullis who fired home.
The hosts again forced the pace at the start of the second period.
Lichfield’s defence initially held firm before Lucy Ford’s strike found the net via a slight deflection.
Claire Wilson compounded Lichfield’s misery late on by adding Uttoxeter’s fifth of the afternoon.
Uttoxeter 2XI player-of-the-match: Lisa Paling.
Uttoxeter players’ player: Claire Wilson.
