A JCB worker caught in a Uttoxeter nightspot with a stash of cocaine for friends escaped with a suspended jail sentence.
Security staff in the Town House, in Queen Street, saw Jamie Bentley acting suspiciously and recovered from him a number of items.
The items included cocaine with a street value of £225.
Mr Nick Burn, prosecuting, said police were called and also found on the defendant had £216 in cash.
A subsequent search of Bentley’s home produced a further £930 in cash and a hydroponic growing system.
Bentley, of Riversfield Drive, Rocester, admitted a charge of possessing cocaine with intent to supply and possessing cannabis at Stafford Crown Court.
The judge handed him an 18 month jail sentence which was suspended for two years.
He was also ordered to pay £100 victim surcharge.
But Recorder Mr Michael Elsom told the 23-year-old: “You have the opportunity of a good work career, but you have let yourself down . . . being involved in the supply of drugs and the use of drugs yourself.
“You could have no complaints if the ruination of your life was completed by me sending you to prison.”
The judge added he was suspending the prison sentence because Bentley had no previous drugs convictions and was trying to make something of his life through his work with the Rocester-based company.
Mrs Debbie Ledbeater, defending, said Bentley’s involvement in drugs supply was to his friends.
She told the court: “His friends would contact him when they were going out.
“He knew a drug dealer and he would get what he and his friends required for an evening out. It was for no financial gain on his part at all.
“It was not a regular thing, it was an occasional night out.”
She said Bentley worked at JCB in a good position and his bank balance was in credit by £1,000.
She added that although he was laid off just before Christmas due to ‘requirements’, the job had now been made back available to him.
Alongside the suspended prison sentence, the judge also decided to confiscate £1,146 of Bentley’s money under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
