UTTOXETER Road Runner Rob Hall came an excellent second in the Xtreme (Mud) Challenge at Catton Hall on Sunday.

The 2012 champion was beaten to first by Connor Hancock, who won the event in a time of 41mins 07secs.

Hall was behind in 42:13, with Chris McCabe third in 44:46.

A record field of more than 200 athletes took part in the event near Burton, with conditions underfoot horrendously muddy, as expected, following the recent rains.

The weather on the day was fair, but weeks of rain had turned the course into a quagmire.

There were plenty of hazards on the entertaining course, including mudslides, electric fences, cargo nets, water tunnels, prickly undergrowth, smoke bombs, fences and impassable inclines.

But the field made their way round, with the final finisher, a veteran male athlete, coming in more than two hours after the start.
