EIGHT thousand people are expected to descend on Uttoxeter this weekend as one of the world’s biggest reggae bands prepares to take to the stage for a unique race day.
A stage can been seen taking shape at Uttoxeter Racecourse as the final preparations are under way in time for UB40 tomorrow night.
David MacDonald, executive director of Uttoxeter Racecourse, said all the boxes had now sold out for the night with 8,000 people expected to attend the race day at the Wood Lane course.
However, residents who want to attend but have not yet got their tickets will still be able to join in the day.
The racecourse has a capacity of 11,000 people so tickets will still be available on the gate.
Mr MacDonald said: “We are expecting a crowd of 8,000 for the concert but we know quite a lot of people were waiting to see the weather forecast and we are very lucky that it looks almost certain to be a lovely summers day.
“Hopefully this will bring more people down on the day.
“This is an amazing event for the town as the racing will be in the evening so thousands of people will be coming in the afternoon and spending time in the town before the racing begins.
“A lot of business will benefit from this. Every hotel is now full in the area.”
No expense has been spared in anticipation of the bands arrival with £60,000 being spent on the stage, production and lighting, which the racecourse has spent the last four days setting up.
The caravan site is also fully booked, with visitors already setting up their pitch in anticipation of the big day.
The racecourse has food units arriving on site with a marquee outside for an extra bar in addition to the services already offered at the site.
UB40 is expected to arrive at 3pm at the popular venue and although they have revealed they are not much of gamblers, they do enjoy the atmosphere.
Mr MacDonald added: “We are almost set up now and it is something we have never seen on this racecourse before.
“I am already considering which band to bring to Uttoxeter next and it is all very exciting.
“We have already had some international artists suggested to us.
“It is very exciting and I think we have picked the right kind of band for our target market.
“We have parents coming along who remember them from the first time round in the 70s and kids who still listen to them today.”
