A POPULAR resident at a Uttoxeter care home has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Elsie Billingham, of High Barrow Care Home, enjoyed a glass of champagne on her 100th birthday yesterday surrounded by fellow residents and care staff.

Mrs Billingham, who was born in Uttoxeter and has lived here all her life started out helping her family on the farm as a young girl.

She then spent the majority of her working life on the production line at the Elke's Biscuits factory - now Fox's Biscuits – in Cheadle Road.

The 100-year-old married once but lost her husband in World War Two soon after they met. She never remarried and has no children or relatives.

A sociable lady, she enjoys singing hymns and Songs of Praise and used to go to church every week.

Mrs Billingham says her motto to live by, and perhaps the secret to living to the age of 100, is 'always look forward, never look back' which was a favourite saying of her mothers and something she took strength from after losing her husband young.

Care home assistant Debbie Edgington said: "Elsie loves to be a part of things, she'll always choose to spend time in the common area with the other residents rather than spending time alone.

"She loves singing hymns and has friends from church come to visit her as she was always very involved in the church.

"She has always enjoyed socialising and loves to be around people."
