FORMER chart-topping star and one of the first music talent show success stories, Gareth Gates, looks set to hit the stage in Uttoxeter next year.
The runner-up to Will Young in the first series of ITV’s Pop Idol, the precursor to X Factor, is the latest name to be linked to the Acoustic Festival of Great Britain 2013 at Uttoxeter Racecourse.
The Hollies and The Proclaimers have already signed up as two of the three headliners for the festival in late May 2013, with the final headliner due to announced shortly.
Gates is set to be a ‘special guest’ performer over the weekend and not one of the three headline acts, the Advertiser understands.
After finishing second in Pop Idol, Gates initially had huge chart success reaching number one on four occasions with Unchained Melody, Anyone Of Us, Suspicious Minds and Comic Relief single Spirit In The Sky.
Despite more top five singles such as Sunshine and Say It Isn’t So, the initial success began to dwindle and Gates found himself dropped by Simon Cowell’s record company Syco.
Since that experience Gates has flirted with the charts again and starred in the 2008 series of ITV reality show Dancing on Ice but has mainly been forging a career for himself in musical theatre.
He played the lead role in West End and UK touring productions of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, before winning a major role in the 25th anniversary tour of Les Miserables.
He has also been a regular on the pantomine circuit.
His presence at the Acoustic Festival of Great Britain would not be a huge shock as in 2013 he is due to hit the road performing new material.
On his website he has announced dates for an acoustic tour of the UK with a gap in the diary for the acoustic festival which is set to take place at the racecourse from Friday, May 31 to Sunday, June 2.
As well as headliners The Hollies and The Proclaimers, numerous other top acts have signed up for the 2013 festival.
They include The Christians, Baka Beyond, The Re-entrants, T.Rextasy, The Quireboys, John Otway and Rory McCleod.
There is also top comedy from the renowned Phil Cool and plenty of entertainment at both the racecourse and in the town itself.
Tickets are available now and more information on how to get them and on what is going on over the three days can be found at www.acousticfestival.co.uk.
