A GROUP of Rocester pupils have successfully completed the 25 mile Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race.
The three crews from Abbotsholme School were competing in the slower and heavier open Canadian canoes (C2 class) rather than in kayak canoes which the majority race in.
However, a school spokesman said they all successfully completed the race, logged some excellent times and were a credit to Abbotsholme.
The annual challenge involved paddling 125 miles of canal and river, finishing under Westminster Bridge.
Along the route were 77 portages where the canoes had to be taken out and walked along the bank past lock gates and put back into the water. There is a limit of 10 hours a day and any crew taking longer is disqualified.
The spokesman added: “The junior teams must camp each night, put up their own tents and cook for themselves making it an extreme challenge all round after paddling for up to nine hours a day.”
