Uttoxeter's bull statue is again targeted

Written byRICHARD CASTLE

UTTOXETER’S bull monument has again been vandalised by ‘yarn bombers’ - just months after its giant bulge was painted red.

The Advertiser reported in November how the statue, which was built to represent Uttoxeter’s agricultural heritage, had its private parts painted red.

Now, months after the graffiti was cleared up, an un-named ‘organisation’ has targeted the bull again, giving it a fetching blue neckerchief.

A statement from the group, which sent the Advertiser its own pictures of its handywork, reads: “Please find a couple of poorly-taken pictures at night time of a yarn bombing event that took place on Friday night in Uttoxeter.

“We are a local organisation trying to bring a bit of light humour to Uttoxeter, with this piece of removable art work and to bring a smile to those passing the bull.”

Although the neckerchief has now been removed by council chiefs, Chamberlain Close resident Luke Bull, who lives right next to the statue, said he was ‘disgusted’ with its ‘defacement’.

Mr Bull had his say after the previous graffiti, claiming that ‘boozy yobs are giving the town a bad name’.

And he was not much more complimentary about the latest group to target the bull.

The 29-year-old said: “I thought this had all ended after the last time, but I walked out of my house the other day and couldn’t believe my eyes.

“I feel hurt and let down that such an iconic figure of the town now appears to be being made into a laughing stock.

“It’s about time these idiots picked on someone, or something, their own size.”

Marchington artist Maggie Hatchard said defacing the statue was ‘disrespectful’ to the artist who created it.

She said: “It’s a magnificent piece of art work and I’m sure that, if the artist wanted the work painted, they’d have done it themselves.

“We’re lucky to have such a great sculpture in Uttoxeter and, in my view, there’s fun and there’s fun and this is a little disrespectful.”
