Uttoxeter fuel prices are finally on the way down

Written byRICHARD CASTLE

FUEL prices in Uttoxeter have fallen in the last three years to come into line with the UK-wide average – but businesses are still feeling the pinch of petrol purchases.

In 2011, the average price of petrol in town was 134.9p per litre but that figure has now dropped to 132.3p per litre.

However, diesel prices remain high, with the average cost per litre in and around Uttoxeter standing at 139.1p.

These figures are still above the national average, which is 131.2p per litre for petrol and 138.6p per litre for diesel.

The cheapest places to buy fuel in Uttoxeter are Tesco, in Town Meadows Way, and Esso, off the A50, where petrol costs 130.9p per litre and diesel costs 137.9p per litre.

The most expensive station, which stands just a few hundred metres from cheaper competitor Tesco, is BP, in Derby Road, which sells petrol for 133.9p per litre and diesel for 140.9p per litre.

Margaret Button, owner of Emilie Duclos florists, said that, although prices are better than three years ago, they are still too high for her to charge for delivery.

She said: “I’m glad things appear to be getting better but we could really do with them coming down a bit more.

“I remember when we were able to charge for delivery but, for some time now, we’ve just been covering our fuel costs.

“I remember when my husband worked in Stoke-on-Trent and always used to buy his petrol there as it was much cheaper than in town.

“The problem is that, if you live in town, you’re more than likely going to use one of the stations here and be paying above average.

“That’s why, in the past, they’ve been able to collectively set prices quite high, although there’s now at least a difference of a couple of pence per litre between the stations.

“Having said that, I’m certainly not complaining and it’s very good news for business that prices have fallen in the last few years.”

Of the other most-used stations in and around Uttoxeter, Shell, off the A50, is offering 131.9p per litre for petrol and 138.9p per litre for diesel.

Sudbury services charge 133.9p per litre for petrol and 139.9p per litre for diesel.

Petrol can be bought as cheaply as 129.9p per litre in Burton, 127.9p per litre in Derby and 126.7p per litre in Stoke-on-Trent.

The lowest out-of-town diesel prices are also lower than in Uttoxeter and can be bought for 137.9p per litre in Burton, 134.7p per litre in Derby and 134.7p per litre in Stoke-on-Trent.
