Uttoxeter champion boxer in the dog house

A UTTOXETER scaffolder who has become one of the area’s top boxers has been inspired to open his own gym.

EBF Under-10 bout Midlands heavyweight champion Reece ‘Rampage’ Jones responded to what he saw as a need in the area for a heavy weights gym by setting one up himself.

He has opened The Dog House Heavy Weight Gym at Unit 7 at Bramshall Industrial Estate near Uttoxeter.

The 25-year-old told the Advertiser he made the plunge of running his own gym in response to a lack of similar facilities in the area.

He said: “There is not really a proper heavy weightlifting gym in Uttoxeter and people have wanted one for a long time.

“People want a good heavy gym as at the minute they are having to travel to Derby or Stoke. They can come in their work clothes in the evening and just have a good session.

“It has been going well so far and I have been having about 20-25 people in a night and that is just through advertising on Facebook.”

Mr Jones is hoping one of the major selling points for the gym is that unlike most in the area there is no monthly fees required - something he thinks will prove popular.

He said: “There is no membership or joining fees, it is just £2.50 each time. At most gyms you have to sign up for a minimum of 12 months and there are joining fees but there is none of that and induction’s are optional.

“I know a lot of people who go to gyms and they don’t think they cater for what they want. There will be a relaxed atmosphere here and people are welcome to bring CD’s and iPod’s to listen to while they work out.”

Mr Jones said he is still scaffolding at the moment but is hoping if the gym can be a success he can make it a full-time business.

He said: “It is a bit hectic at the moment and I have had to slow down the boxing training a bit.

“It is not a fitness gym it is strictly a weightlifting gym so I would still need to travel to Stoke for the boxing training so I haven’t got the time at the moment.

“I’m just getting it up and running now and puitting all my energy into it.”

The gym is open weeknights 5.30pm to 10pm and 9am to 5pm on Saturdays. It is closed on Sundays.
