THE former chairman of the Uttoxeter Lions has been given a prestigious award for services to the community.
Steve Shields accepted a Uttoxeter Town Council commendation from town mayor Hugh Montgomery on Tuesday evening for his services as a volunteer for the community group Uttoxeter Lions as well as with various other organisations.
Mr Shields said on receiving his award: “I am very pleased and honoured.
“I’m very grateful. I don’t think that anyone plans to go into voluntary work, but most people get there by accident.
“You notice that most people who are involved in the Lions get involved with all kinds of things.
“We all like to be involved in community things.
“Thanks also go to my Lions colleagues, and especially my wife.
“Most of the things we do are about teamwork.
“I have made many friends since being in Uttoxeter.”
Councillor Montgomery said: “It is with great pleasure that I present you with this award for services to the community, including your work with various charities and organisations over the years.”
The Uttoxeter Lions community group are made up of community-spirited volunteers who organise popular events Lark in the Park family fun day, the annual Beer Festival, the annual firework display and the Christmas Cracker night.
