Schooling unit opens in centre

CHILDREN with behavioural difficulties are to benefit from ‘improved facilities’ in Uttoxeter.

The pupil referral unit will be based at former office space in Bradley Street and will educate children who are excluded from school, unwell or otherwise unable to attend a mainstream school.

East Staffordshire Borough Council planning chiefs are backing plans put in by Staffordshire County Council for the educational unit, which will provide larger facilities for the children who need it.

Councillor Ben Adams, cabinet member for learning and skills said: “As the lease on the current premises in Uttoxeter was due to expire, the opportunity arose to move the Pupil Referral Unit base to a better site.

“The new site will provide a larger more useful space to develop much improved facilities and education provision for young people in the area.

“In partnership with the Pupil Referral Unit, a new lease has been agreed in premises in Bradley Street in Uttoxeter, subject to planning permission for a change of use.”

Four days after the application was submitted to the borough council, planning chiefs gave it the go-ahead.

Jonathan Imber, planner at East Staffordshire Borough Council said: “The council has no objections to the proposal as submitted.”
