School chalks up top Ofsted inspection score

A PRIMARY school has turned the page on its troubled past after education watchdogs declared it ‘outstanding’.

Ofsted gave the top grade to Needwood Primary School across the board, delighting head teacher Michelle O’Dell, who said everyone associated with the Newborough school was ‘absolutely thrilled’.

“It’s an accolade for all of the hard work and dedication of the pupils, governors, staff, parents and the community,” she said.

“We will look to build on our success, maintain our excellent standards and strive to build a school community that moves towards the future.”

In its report on the 49-pupil Yoxall Road school, Ofsted said the school had improved on its ‘good’ rating awarded after its last inspection in 2008.

“Outstanding leadership and management have improved teaching and learning, and made teaching highly effective. Consequently, pupils’ achievement is excellent,” it said.

“Attainment is well above average in English and mathematics, and has been for several years.

“One reason for this is the consistenly high level of attendance, which means pupils rarely miss out on learning.”

Management of teachers’ performance was ‘robust’, teamwork ‘excellent’, and pupils enjoyed being ‘constantly encouraged to achieve their best’, Ofsted said.

Marking in English and maths was ‘well-focussed’, while pupils’ behaved ‘excellently’, were ‘highly supportive’ of each other and felt ‘very safe’.

“Subjects are brought together in highly engaging, exceptionally well-planned themes that provide pupils with many memorable experiences,” Ofsted said.

“Reading and writing skills are consolidated consistently well in all subjects.”

Needwood was told to improve its marking and provide more chances for pupils to use their numeracy skills.

The school was previously hit by a child protection probe and reports it had lost pupils following a probe into teaching standards.
