A CHARITY providing emergency food to those who cannot provide for themselves has met with a Uttoxeter organisation for older people as the need for their services continues to grow.
Vic Wileman, of the Salvation Army, met with members of Uttoxeter and District Forum 50 Plus to discuss how the charity helps people in the town.
He explained to members they needed the support to help it continue providing enough food to people who need their help with three meals a day for seven days, as well as meeting all of their dietary requirements.
The charity works with nutritionists to ensure they cater for everyone from expectant mothers to the elderly.
Mr Wileman said: “We have been doing this in partnership with other organisations for 27 plus years and we are working with agencies and charities close to the people who are having problems, including a lack of food.
“We work with 34 agencies and charities and they ring us up and give us the background we need.
“We will always provide seven days of food and the sort of food we provide enables them to have three meals a day and at least one will be hot.”
Members were told that since 2012, in one month alone, the need for emergency food had risen from two families to 15 in 2014.
In East Staffordshire, the need in one month has seen a rise from 28 in 2012 to 80 in 2014. Over the whole year, volunteers provided 36,000 items of food making 4,500 meals.
Mr Wileman added: “We work with the whole spectrum of homelessness. For example we had to deliver one food parcel to hospital as the agency would not provide an address.
“We had a call from the man a couple of weeks later and he had looked at the parcel and decided he had got to make it last so halved it so he had just one meal a day.
“As it got less, he halved it again. By the time we got to him he had been without food for a week so we provided him with enough food for seven weeks. These people are human beings and it could be me or you, it is as simple as that.”
