A GROUP of Uttoxeter residents waited for months for a noisy manhole cover to be repaired in their street, after 'loud clanking noises' disrupted families trying to sleep.
Residents of both Demontfort Way and Spencer Close in Uttoxeter were plagued for months by a faulty manhole cover which made a loud, clanking sound every time a vehicle travelled over it.
The fault, which was first reported in May through the Fix My Street website, was first seen to be photographed by council workers by the end of May.
However, residents had to chase the report several times to receive a response.
In July, they were told that Severn Trent Water was responsible for the expected repairs, yet the final repair work was not carried out until late August.
Miles Pixley, of Demontfort Way said: "They came out in mid-July and closed the job off without doing anything.
"When we contacted Severn Trent Water directly and their operator heard the noise down the phone, they agreed to come out again.
"Two weeks ago they confirmed no-one had revisited yet and the job was not scheduled.
"Each time they told us they were busy due to the adverse weather conditions.
"Nearby residents with young children reported that the noise had become a real nuisance, especially when settling the children down at night.
"After making a formal complaint on the whole affair to Severn Trent, we were told that they would try and send someone out to make a temporary fix last week, before a full repair at the start of this week.
"When the weather was warm we had to resort to using our spare room on the back of the house so we could get some sleep as we couldn’t have the windows open at night for the noise."
The repair was carried out on August 23.
Mr Pixley added: "We are delighted this is now fixed and look forward to disturbance free days and a good night's sleep."
A spokesman for Severn Trent Water said: "“We would like to apologise to anyone affected by noise generated by the damaged manhole cover on Demontfort Way and Spencer Close in Uttoxeter.
“This was first reported to us in July and we went out to investigate shortly after.
"Unfortunately as this cover was an unusual size, a special order needed to be placed before the repair could be completed.
“We would always encourage our customers to report any damage manholes covers to us on 0800 783 4444 so that we can investigate and carry out any repairs needed as soon as possible."
