A POST and Times reporter will be taking on a swim-athon challenge, all in the name of charity.
Jo Craig, 20, reporter for the Uttoxeter Post and Times, will be taking on a 2.5-kilometre swim-athon in aid of Cure Leukaemia, joining forces to raise money for the charity with fund-raisers Rob Smyth, Burton Mail reporter, who is running a half marathon, and Geoff Merryweather, Post and Times photographer, who is challenging himself to a mammoth 100-kilometre bike ride.
The fund-raising endeavour is in support of the Burton Mail’s Take Five Minutes campaign for the wife of Ashbourne Telegraph editor Stephen Sinfield, Katherine Sinfield, who is suffering from chronic myeloid leukaemia.
Miss Craig, 20, said: “I haven’t swum this kind of distance before but I’m looking forward to the challenge.
“I have always loved swimming and would go as far as to say it’s my favourite sport.
“The furthest I have swum to date is a mile.
“Cure Leukaemia is a worthy cause – everyone at some point in their life will know someone close to them affected by cancer and it impacts every aspect of a person’s life.
“It’s difficult to imagine the scale of suffering that someone with a long-term illness has to go through on a daily basis and I hope that the money I can raise can help the work that Cure Leukaemia do to improve the quality of life of cancer patients, take steps towards finding cures and improve existing treatments.
“Please consider sponsoring me on my Just Giving page if you have some spare pennies, as every pound counts.”
A recent project by Cure Leukaemia helped secure a grant for £2.2m to build the Centre for Clinical Haematology at the QE Hospital in Birmingham.
This has resulted in the development of the second largest adult stem cell transplant programme in the UK.
During the past decade, Cure Leukaemia has funded a network of 15 specialist nurses who work across the West Midlands region to administer pioneering drug treatments to leukaemia patients.
